Pulmonary Hypertension: A Serious Disease That Is Too Often Ignored

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is not simply "high pressure in the lungs." It is a progressive disease that places tremendous strain on the right side of the heart and, if left untreated, can ultimately lead to right heart failure and premature death.

The challenge is that its symptoms are often subtle and nonspecific: shortness of breath, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, dizziness, or even syncope. As a result, many patients experience significant delays before receiving the correct diagnosis, losing valuable time during which effective therapies could have altered the course of their disease.

Today, we have better diagnostic tools, specialized pulmonary hypertension centers, and therapies that can significantly improve symptoms, quality of life, and outcomes for appropriately selected patients. The key is recognizing PH early and referring patients before irreversible right ventricular dysfunction develops.

As clinicians, we should maintain a high index of suspicion when evaluating patients with unexplained dyspnea, exercise intolerance, or echocardiographic findings suggestive of pulmonary hypertension.

Recognize early. Diagnose accurately. Treat promptly. Change lives.
